Explore the Intricate Connection Between Personality, Identity, and Language Learning in my New Podcast Series!

Welcome to my new podcast series!

For the past year, I've been very interested in how personality and identity connect to one's ability to speak a second language.

It was clear that speaking a second language fluently and confidently required more than just learning grammar and vocabulary.

It even requires more than just practice.

In my mind, good communication skills require an understanding of one's thoughts, feelings, and actions to develop foundational confidence that will last a lifetime.

Join me as we dive deep into the complex world of personality and identity and their important role in improving and developing your English language communication skills.

Enjoy : )

Episode 1: The Importance of Understanding Personality

Following along with the transcript

Welcome to this first episode of my deep dive into personality and identity in connection to language learning, language communication skills. Basically, in connection with your journey here with me at Phil's conversation.

In this episode, I'd like to get into what exactly personality is.

When I started researching personality, I was quite surprised at the definitions that I found because it made me realize how unaware I am about what personality was, and I honestly couldn't even describe my own personality - What is my personality? I think it's something that people perhaps don't think about too often. I didn't think about it, but it is a crucial part of your identity, actually. Right. Identity and personality are very interconnected. I will get more into identity later on in the podcast.

So, I would like to spend just a little bit of time on understanding personality, because it goes hand in hand with our journey here at Phil's Conversation, where you and I are working together to develop your English communication skills, but also bring out the best version of yourself, your authentic English-speaking personality, because that's what is going to allow you to connect with the world. Connect with people feeling comfortable in your own skin.

So what is personality? Doctor Joe Dispenza, whom I'm a big fan of, talks a lot about personality and agrees that it encompasses a person's consistent patterns of their thoughts, their feelings, and their actions. And what we think and what we feel and what we do is directly connected to how we were brought up, connected to our culture, connected to all of our past experiences, and connected to the environment which we are in.

Understanding personality is important because it is a summary of everything we've experienced. I mean, how important is that when you talk about identity and who you are? And also if you take personality apart, I mentioned thoughts. Understanding how you think is super important, especially when you want to learn something or change something about yourself. Because thoughts cause feelings, and those feelings influence our behavior or our actions.

So you might think to yourself, 'I suck at speaking English.' So how do I feel about it? Bad. I'm not going to speak English. I feel like crap if I have to. So what action do you take? You choose to avoid English speaking situations. You choose not to share your great idea in a meeting. You choose not to go up to that person and say hello. It's amazing how our thoughts and feelings influence our actions. And one of the first steps in moving forward is recognizing those thoughts and feelings and acknowledging the action or inaction and understanding how we can change that. By being aware of what's causing us to go down this path of negative behavior. And that is why I would like to introduce this way of thinking to you as a client because it's going to influence how we work together, and it's going to raise a new awareness in you and also create a new focus.

I look forward to sharing my journey with you on this deep dive into understanding personality and identity, and how it connects to your journey of language learning.
