Prepared Text: This means taking the time to prepare a text that you then read aloud to me.
When you prepare a statement, you can make sure that your answer is easy to understand and straight to the point. This can help prevent misunderstandings and confusion. Furthermore, it can help you feel less stressed because you don't have to worry about coming up with an answer on the spot. It also allows you to think about the vocabulary you'd like to use and gives you the opportunity to practice your message beforehand.
Off the top of your head: This means answering the question without preparing a full written text. However, you can write down notes to help you remember what you want to say.
When you answer a question off the top of your head, you are speaking from your own thoughts and opinions at that moment. This can make your answer seem more genuine and real. It can also help you improve your quick thinking skills and make decisions more easily.
Change your focus
Change it up by adding variation:
1. Focus on flow by familiarising yourself with what you want to say
-
Record your message in your phone audio recording app
-
Listen to yourself: are you making a lot of pauses?
-
Record again and see if you can do it with less hesitation
2. Focus on confidence by speaking without overthinking
-
Look at your notes then flip over the page and press record!
-
Listen to yourself: were you able to express yourself clearly and were your ideas well organized?
-
Record again and reflect
3. Focus on clarity by speaking at a comfortable pace while clearly saying the words you intend to say
-
Listen to your recording and see whether you can understand your own words
-
As you listen, write down any words you mispronounce. Look the word up and listen to the pronunciation.
-
Record again and repeat.
