A student of mine and I are currently reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.

The story is told through the eyes of a young girl, who growing up in the slums of Brooklyn, has a beautiful way of looking at the world. The story takes place in 1912 at the turn of the 20th century, and if you've ever been to New York City, then the setting of the story should sound a little familiar.

I'd recommend reading about it on Wikipedia or GoodReads. See if you can make your way through the English :)
